Overview

The Adverse Effects of Aloe Vera JuiceAloe vera is a plant that is related to the cactus with long thick leaves. Its leaves contain two substances, called the gel and latex, which are used medicinally. Aloe vera gel is the clear material located inside the leaf, while latex is the yellow substance just beneath the skin. Aloe vera latex is sometimes called aloe vera juice. Aloe vera juice may cause potentially serious side effects so consult with your doctor before using it medicinally.

Electrolyte Imbalance

Aloe vera juice, when taken by mouth, is a stimulant laxative and may lower the levels of important electrolytes, such as potassium, in your body. Low potassium levels may alter the effects of certain heart and blood pressure medicines, such as digoxin and water pills, and possibly increase their side effects. Do not use aloe vera juice consecutively for more than 10 days because it may lead to dependency and excessive fluid and electrolyte loss.

Gastrointestinal Effects

Aloe vera juice taken orally can cause some gastrointestinal side effects, such as stomach pain and cramps. If you take aloe vera juice in high amounts, such as more than 1 g per day, for a long time you may experience bloody diarrhea and weight loss. Aloe vera juice can be irritating to your bowels and should not be taken if you have intestinal problems such as Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis or obstruction.

Blood Sugar Effects

Be careful about consuming aloe vera juice if you are diabetic or prone to hypoglycemia because it may lower your blood sugar levels. The National Institutes of Health warns that diabetics taking aloe vera juice should monitor their blood sugar levels closely. Aloe vera juice may also potentiate the blood sugar lowering effects of diabetes medicines, such glyburide or insulin.

Other Effects

Drugs.com warns that taking aloe juice orally for long periods of time may cause potentially serious side effects, including muscle weakness, heart problems and blood in your urine. If you take large daily doses of aloe vera juice long-term, you may develop kidney problems, including kidney failure. Avoid aloe vera juice if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
