Subway was the brainstorm of a young medical student named Fred DeLuca who was looking for a way to finance his medical education. Using a loan from a family friend, DeLuca opened up a submarine sandwich shop in Bridgeport, Connecticut. The enterprise grew and was a success; eight years later, the partners began franchising the chain of shops as Subway. Currently, Subway is the largest submarine sandwich chain with more than 34,000 locations worldwide. The menu includes a variety of sandwich and salad options.

Subway offers many sandwich items including its 6-inch Turkey Breast sub. All 6-inch sandwich nutrition values include nine-grain wheat bread with lettuce, tomatoes, onions, green peppers and cucumbers. For a footlong sandwich, the values must be doubled. The 6-inch Turkey Breast sub contains 280 calories and the 6-inch Veggie Patty contains 390 calories. Subway also has salads and breakfast omelet subs. On nine-grain bread only, the 6-inch Egg White and Cheese omelet sub has 320 calories. The Black Forest Ham Salad, without dressing, has 110 calories; using 1 tsp. of the dressings adds 30 to 110 calories.
The American Heart Association recommends limiting saturated fats to less than 7 percent of your daily calories. Subway prides itself on having a variety of low-fat options. The 6-inch Veggie Delight sub has 2.5 g total fat with 0.5 g saturated fat. The 6-inch Turkey Breast on Flatbread has 6 g total fat with 1 g saturated and its 6-inch Low-Fat Buffalo Chicken with Ranch Dressing has 5 g total fat with 1.5 g saturated fat.
